Chapter 11

At dawn in the Commons, Sancia wakes in Polina Carbonari’s smuggler camp beneath rising carnival lanterns. Disoriented and fearing Crasedes’s arrival, she confirms with Polina that the galleon’s slaves were slaughtered. Polina presses for why, condemning the city’s cruelty and urging Sancia toward decisive resistance.

Sancia joins Orso, Berenice, and Gregor in a tent. They lament Valeria’s silence and debate Crasedes’s aims and inaction. Sancia details her encounter: overpowering gravity control, a dangerously persuasive voice resisted only by Valeria’s protections, and evidence that the black-clad figure is a living body Crasedes puppets via wrappings and a bone totem. They speculate that destroying these might disrupt his manifestation, though approach seems impossible.

Orso pivots to Valeria’s timing. He argues Valeria could move once Michiel twinned their lexicons, thinning reality enough for her to traverse between cradles. The group infers Valeria may now dwell across Michiel foundries, explaining her recent access to Sancia during sleep.

They decide to seek a Michiel foundry, then use dolorspina venom to safely sedate Sancia and prompt Valeria’s contact, avoiding the compromised Foundryside home while Crasedes and Dandolo agents watch it.

Before departure, Gregor urges Polina to recall her people, warning of imminent, unknowable danger. Polina refuses, accepting constant peril as the cost of their cause and continuing operations through carnival to support and protect their community.
