Chapter 33
Overview
Crasedes teleports remaining Morsini defenders away using Clef, securing holdout foundries. At Ofelia’s estate, he installs Tribuno’s definition into a half-built lexicon, taunts the captive Valeria, and twinned city foundries to dispute time, plunging Tevanne into patchwork night. Berenice realizes his method and rushes toward the Dandolo campo as the darkness spreads.
Summary
At dawn in the Morsini campo, Crasedes Magnus finds Dandolo troops stalled by siege-ready foundries harboring Morsini holdouts. Using Clef, he opens reality’s “door,” teleports into the foundries, and displaces the defenders into lethal environments—over the ocean and into arctic snow—clearing both positions for Dandolo control.
Crasedes returns to Ofelia Dandolo’s estate ballroom, where a skeletal, heat-shrouded lexicon awaits with Tribuno’s definition installed. He addresses Clef’s silence, hinting at their past bond, then confronts Valeria, now confined to a shabby Foundryside lexicon and made unwelcome by his campo-wide controls.
Crasedes and Valeria trade barbs over power and purpose. Provoked by Valeria’s insinuations about Clef and love, Crasedes shatters the ballroom windows with a roar but resumes his work, insisting he won’t wait for midnight to remake her. He turns to the lexicon’s specialized wall to execute his citywide plan.
Flipping linked commands, Crasedes twins his device to captured city lexicons and issues an instruction that disputes time. A palpable pulse passes through Tevanne; daylight buckles into sudden night over swathes of the city, unsettling citizens and Ofelia alike, while Gregor remains unresponsive under compulsion.
Moving through the Commons, Berenice observes the sky’s patchwork darkness and deduces Crasedes is stacking Tribuno’s authorities across twinned foundries to rewrite reality, including time. She notes gaps where Morsini and Candiano lexicons aren’t yet captured and sprints toward the Dandolo walls, seeking Sancia—who remains unreachable—as darkness continues to spread.
