At her estate, Ofelia surveys Dandolo’s rooftops while workers unload crates into her ballroom. She orders everything brought inside despite concerns about protections and cooling. Crasedes arrives, dismisses the laborers, and declares he will handle the safeguards, signaling that the room will house a nonstandard lexicon.

Crasedes presents a newly made definition plate covered in unfamiliar, precisely written sigils. He explains that, paired with Tribuno’s definition in their lexicon, it will trap Valeria inside her current device. To prevent Valeria from seizing control, he plans to stack multiple copies of Tribuno’s definition and expects to obtain many after a party at the Morsini compound that evening.

Ofelia recoils at the implied scale of violence needed for this plan and questions whether there is another way. Crasedes argues that treachery and death are required to build a moral world, reminding Ofelia she has already embraced necessity by orchestrating her husband Ottaviano’s death when he bent House Dandolo toward empire.

As Ofelia weeps over the city’s corruption, Crasedes names power as the force that warps minds and vows to end it in Tevanne that night. He then makes a personal pledge: he will return Gregor whole and free of bindings, recognizing Ofelia’s desperate choices and the unintended costs. He insists Gregor is not yet lost, and that what cannot be restored must be most valued.
