Chapter 36

Overview

Crasedes reveals a massive lexicon asserting Valeria’s nonexistence, dragging a ruined Valeria into view. Valeria admits she plans to unravel all scriving, erase the knowledge from humankind, and then die, regardless of casualties. Under compulsion, Orso confirms Berenice likely holds the imperiat. Berenice disables key lexicons via twinned boxes, weakening Crasedes’s network and forcing him to leave Gregor on guard and depart with Clef. Crasedes warns that Sancia’s editor gift is slowly killing her.

Summary

Crasedes delivers bound Sancia and Orso to a ballroom housing the battered Foundryside lexicon and a colossal, skeletal rig twinned across Tevanne that asserts Valeria does not exist. He unmuzzles Orso and demands the imperiat. He forces Valeria to appear: she is grievously damaged by the citywide denial of her existence.

Pressed by Crasedes, Valeria calmly reveals her hidden intent: upon freedom she would undo every scriving, erase the knowledge of scriving from humankind, and then destroy herself—an act she estimates would kill over six million. She argues this is the only way to end oppression enabled by power. Crasedes contrasts his plan as preserving civilization while enforcing morality, and again seeks the imperiat.

Sancia refuses. Crasedes compels Orso, who under duress admits Berenice likely has the imperiat. To break Sancia, Crasedes nails her hand and threatens further torture. Meanwhile, Berenice activates a twinned box with the imperiat to kill a major foundry lexicon by nullifying its distance assertion, triggering fail-safes; the city quakes and the enforced night lightens above that sector.

Realizing his network is being dismantled, Crasedes hesitates to leave and instead summons Gregor to guard the room. He taunts Sancia that Valeria’s grant of editor privileges exacts a life-price, accelerating her aging; hybrids like her seldom live past forty. Gregor arrives, dead-eyed, and is ordered to kill any intruder. Crasedes then departs with Clef to hunt Berenice, leaving Sancia and Orso under Gregor’s watch.
