Chapter 32
Overview
Crasedes appears on Ofelia’s balcony with Clef and a compelled, tearful Gregor, declaring he now holds the construct, key, and definition. He has trapped Valeria by chaining twinned lexicons across Dandolo foundries but needs the imperiat back. He orders heightened security and Sancia’s isolation, while Ofelia breaks down before her controlled son.
Summary
On her balcony, Ofelia listens to distant screams from the Morsini campo and wavers over the cost of her choices. Crasedes arrives, stating “it is done,” and shows Clef, saying he now has the construct, the key, and the definition and can begin reshaping reality.
Crasedes brings forward Gregor, whose body obeys but whose cheeks are wet with tears. He explains Gregor has partly redefined himself yet still cannot resist the prior commands. Ofelia, shaken, asks to free him, but Crasedes refuses until their work is complete.
Crasedes outlines his rig: he has inserted Tribuno’s command into the Dandolo ballroom lexicon and twinned foundries so reality believes Valeria does not exist. The chain must hold; if too many links fail, Valeria could escape, possibly into the ballroom lexicon, which would be disastrous.
Crasedes admits the imperiat slipped away—likely with a girl—and suspects it may be coming to the Dandolo campo. He orders Ofelia to tighten wall security and, when Sancia is captured, to keep her far from anything augmented. He intends to interrogate Sancia to locate the imperiat and hints Clef “won’t talk” to him.
Before departing, Crasedes reasserts control over Gregor with a direct command to obey Ofelia. He vanishes using Clef’s power to ignore space, leaving Ofelia staring at her unresponsive, silently weeping son. Overcome, Ofelia sits at his feet and weeps.
