Chapter 12

Overview

Sancia sedates herself near a Michiel foundry and contacts Valeria within a lexicon’s penumbra. Valeria reveals Crasedes is strongest near midnight and seeks a powerful hierophantic component from the Mountain—the same piece Valeria needs to protect the crew. Sancia demands help for Gregor and Clef, then the team commits to infiltrating the Mountain before midnight, knowing Crasedes will be ready.

Summary

At the Michiel campo’s edge, Sancia, Berenice, Orso, and Gregor test proximity to a foundry using a Michiel-tuned light. To reach Valeria, Sancia licks a dolorspina dart for sedation and collapses.

Sancia “wakes” inside a nauseating bubble beneath dark waters—Valeria’s constrained space within a lexicon’s penumbra. Valeria confirms Crasedes’s resurrection via manipulated time is flawed and distorting, and that he seeks Valeria to close her “loopholes” and force her to complete his world-changing design. Valeria cannot fight directly and needs a stronger tool.

Valeria explains both she and Crasedes are limited: Valeria survives only in unreality; Crasedes is anchored to a lost midnight and gains greater permissions as night nears. He cannot relearn erased methods, but his voice remains dangerously persuasive. Both require a far more powerful construct than a foundry lexicon—specifically a hierophantic component from the Mountain, where Tribuno Candiano’s building functions like a mind.

Sancia, wary of manipulation, forces Valeria to promise to try to help Gregor and Clef before accepting new protections. Valeria imprints the image of a small golden cone component. Unintended visions follow: a wrapped man weeping over a dying, shackled boy in a cave with Valeria’s casket, and later Crasedes unlocking impossible doors with Clef before a landscape of countless dead.

Sancia wakes, recounts Valeria’s guidance but withholds the visions. The team concludes Valeria can shield them only if they acquire the Mountain’s component. They decide to break into the Mountain and steal it before midnight, aware Crasedes likely anticipates their move.
