Chapter 41
Overview
Valeria restores herself and seizes the city’s systems, beginning a process to end all scriving. With no other option, Gregor swallows the twinning tab and merges with Valeria, destabilizing her. Sancia uses Clef to collapse Crasedes’s lexicon, ending the alterations. The sky returns to normal, but Gregor emerges transformed, declaring he is not Gregor anymore.
Summary
Valeria stands, detaches from the Foundryside lexicon, heals, and expands into her former titanic form. She announces the return of all lexicons and begins remaking herself, declaring an end to warping and a return to a primal world, terrifying the Foundrysiders as Crasedes begs to be freed to stop her.
Facing no viable choices, Gregor proposes destroying Crasedes’s lexicon and Tribuno’s authorities. Realizing his intention, Sancia pleads with him to stop as Gregor removes the scrived knife, cutting their link, and swallows the bronze tab meant to twin a human with Valeria.
Valeria’s colossal form glitches as Gregor convulses. Seizing the opening, Sancia races to Crasedes’s lexicon and drives Clef into it. Clef rapidly collapses the rig’s arguments, overheating its core by tricking the heat casing, while Valeria flickers, screams, and finally disappears.
The unnatural night lifts to a normal, moonlit sky as the alterations end. Meanwhile, Gregor’s mind floods with ancient memories and structures as he merges, becoming something vast—akin to a city—while a trapped, atonal voice protests within.
With the lexicon destroyed and Crasedes still bound, Sancia approaches Gregor. A cold, detached voice—Valeria-like through Gregor’s mouth—answers her. He declares he is not Gregor anymore, confirming the irreversible cost of their victory.
