Chapter 31

Overview

Crasedes consolidates power, massacres the Morsinis, and reveals plans to synchronize Tevanne’s lexicons to remake Valeria and control human morality. At Foundryside he compels Gregor, seizes Clef, slips through reality, and steals Valeria’s lexicon. Sancia is captured by Dandolo troops, while Berenice escapes with the imperiat, preserving a counterplay.

Summary

On Foundryside’s roof, Gregor orders Claudia to evacuate to the Slopes and seek Polina Carbonari, hinting the city may need a broader flight. Meanwhile below, Sancia, Berenice, Orso, Valeria, and Clef rush to finish a hierophant-killing slug and a contingency plate to merge Sancia with Valeria. Clef’s origins are probed; Valeria implies Clef once opened paths between layers of reality for the Maker.

Ofelia, at her estate, hosts a rapidly built half-lexicon under green glass as Crasedes declares he will soon bring a “construct” and orders maximum defenses. He hints his growing permissions as midnight nears.

Crasedes arrives outside Foundryside before midnight. He confesses a past as a slave, justifies exterminating the Morsini elite, and reveals his aim to reforge Valeria to enforce morality by removing human choice. He outlines a plan to synchronize Tevanne’s lexicons into a citywide rig and needs Clef’s permissions to bypass Valeria’s barriers.

As Berenice finishes the slug, Gregor hesitates, recalling Crasedes’s leverage over Ofelia’s debt. Crasedes speaks the trigger; Gregor is compelled, attacks Sancia and Orso, and beats Sancia before seizing Clef with a cloth and handing him to Crasedes. Using Clef, Crasedes cracks reality, vanishing with Gregor, then reappears inside Foundryside, removes Valeria’s lexicon, and demands the imperiat. Dandolo soldiers storm in; Sancia is darted and captured.

Crasedes searches an escape route but misses Berenice, who hid beneath a small bridge. After he departs, Berenice confirms Sancia lives and flees with the imperiat, preserving the one tool that might counter Crasedes’s citywide synchronization and reforging plans.
