Act Three - The Angel’s Game — Chapter 13

David arrives in Gràcia and uses a café phone to call Valera’s office, but the secretary refuses to connect him after hours. He then calls Ricardo Salvador, who warns that the police—likely led by Víctor Grandes—are hunting David and may pin Roures’s and Marlasca’s widow’s deaths on him. Salvador also suspects Jaco has returned.

Determined to reach Valera, David goes to the lawyer’s office on Avenida Diagonal. He forces his way past the porter and intimidates the secretary, Margarita, into calling Valera at home. Valera answers, and David demands Corelli’s location.

Valera insists he has never met Corelli and only received a cheque and a letter instructing him to handle David’s legal troubles and deliver a sealed envelope. He explains he secured David’s earlier release by pressuring Inspector Grandes, not through any direct contact with Corelli.

Pressed about Marlasca, Valera says his late father suspected Corelli might not even exist and that Marlasca handled all related correspondence. Valera reveals Marlasca created a fund of about 100,000 French francs to pay Juan Corbera (Jaco) and María Antonia Sanahuja (Irene Sabino), among other discreet payments his father managed personally.

David forces Valera to search his father’s private diaries for further details and secures Valera’s home address. Before leaving, David cuts the office phone line to prevent warnings to the lawyer or the police, tightening his control over the next move in his investigation.
