Act Three - The Angel’s Game — Chapter 25
Overview
David Martín bids a quiet farewell to Isabella, returning a treasured book that saved his life and money to repay Sempere’s kindness. He reveals the Cemetery of Forgotten Books, where he hides the cursed manuscript and discovers echoes of Lux Aeterna everywhere. Finally, he leaves Barcelona by ship, parting from Isabella and the city.
Summary
At night, David Martín visits Sempere & Sons one last time and finds Isabella closing the shop. He returns The Steps of Heaven, still holding the bullet that saved him, and leaves an envelope of money to repay years of generosity, framing it as a future wedding gift. They acknowledge he must leave, sharing a restrained, affectionate farewell.
David leads Isabella through the Raval to the Cemetery of Forgotten Books. With Isaac’s blessing, he introduces her to the sanctuary and its creed: books hold the souls of writers and readers alike. Leaving Isabella at the entrance, David goes alone into the depths to dispose of the manuscript that has haunted him.
In a secluded chamber marked by a mirror and memories of the man in black, David hides the manuscript between black-leather spines. Sampling nearby volumes, he realizes they all reconfigure the same dark tale—variations of the same words and images—coalescing into the recurring fable of Lux Aeterna. He returns to Isabella, who has chosen a book, and together they leave the labyrinth.
Isabella accompanies David to the dock. After a final embrace and an agreement to avoid solemn promises, David boards the midnight ship under Captain Olmo. As Barcelona’s lights recede and Isabella remains on the pier, David watches the city vanish into the night, already turning to memory.
