Summary
After his bruising encounter with Andreas Corelli, David seeks a friendly face at The Voice of Industry. He finds the editorial office changed and unfriendly, and Rosell informs him that Don Basilio left two months earlier for La Vanguardia. Determined, David heads there in search of guidance.
At La Vanguardia, David is warmly received by Don Basilio, whose stature and confidence have only grown. David explains he needs information for a story about the 1904 death of the prominent lawyer Diego Marlasca. Don Basilio agrees to help and boasts of the paper’s formidable archive.
Don Basilio guides David through a hidden passage to La Vanguardia’s secret library. There, he introduces José María Brotons, the stern archivist. After a teasing exchange about a “blood sacrifice,” Brotons softens and agrees to assist with David’s search, opening the door to deeper investigation into Marlasca’s case.
