Overview
Alone at night, David Martín wrestles with the emptiness and manipulation behind the religious tale he is being paid to create. After witnessing Isabella’s private vulnerability and self-harm scars, he confronts his own scruples but, pressed by a looming meeting with Corelli, forces himself to begin writing.
Summary
Night falls over Barcelona as David Martín retreats to his study, seeking air and inspiration for Corelli’s commissioned book. From his window he notices Isabella below; unseen, David watches her undress, examine the cuts on her arms and thighs, and stand defeated before turning out the light. The sight unsettles David, exposing Isabella’s hidden pain.
Returning to his desk, David reviews his notes: threadbare plots of revelations, messiahs, promised paradises, and meddling deities. He recognizes them as manipulative clichés tailored to soothe or incite, and questions whether this mercenary fabrication is what “the boss” expects from him.
A recent letter summons David to report on his progress within twenty-four hours. Acknowledging he has nothing but suspicions and doubts, David sets aside his scruples under deadline pressure. He feeds a fresh sheet into the Underwood and, despite misgivings, forces himself to begin writing the commission.
