Overview
David returns home and clashes with Isabella over a dress from the house’s past, provoking her to threaten departure. After a raw exchange, they reconcile when David admits loneliness and fear regarding Corelli. They renegotiate their living terms as equals and seal a sincere friendship.
Summary
David reenters the gloomy tower house and finds Isabella dressed in an old gown from Irene Sabino’s trunk. His cold disapproval and order to put it back trigger Isabella’s anger. She prepares to leave, accusing David of belittling her and being incapable of love or openness.
Confronted, David apologizes and asks her to stay, confessing he does not want to be alone. The tension eases; Isabella changes, returns, and they share a quiet moment at the window. Pressed for honesty, David admits she is his only true friend.
Isabella challenges David’s trust in Corelli, reading fear in his face. David concedes he is anxious and may be in trouble, though he gives few details. Isabella urges him to sever ties with Corelli, but David says it is not that simple.
They agree to new terms: no more authoritarian behavior, a “democracy” in the house, and boundaries around intimacy. They shake on it and embrace. The chapter ends with their renewed bond, framed by David’s admission of fear and their pledge of friendship: “Friends? Till death us do part.”
