Act One - City of the Damned — Chapter 25

David Martín dreams the house is flooding, then descends to a hidden operating room where masked, identical figures with Doctor Trías’s face prepare him for surgery. Calm and immobilized, David watches as they cut his forehead; a black cloud bleeds into the water and something inside him loosens.

A boy with David’s childhood face holds his hand as two black filaments emerge, forming a fist-sized spider marked with a pale angel. A surgeon skewers the spider; it withers to dust, and David’s wound closes. The lights die, the room empties, and he ascends as the house drains like a surfacing submarine.

David wakes at noon in dazzling light. The money remains on the table. His tinnitus has vanished, the pressure in his skull is gone, and his senses feel newly awakened. Searching for a mirror, he finds all doors locked; the staircase is swallowed by darkness, and the basement door from his dream is now only a painting of an angel by a lake.

Calling for Andreas Corelli brings no answer. David notices an empty portrait frame among many faces and the sweet scent of money on his fingers. He pockets the hundred thousand francs, exits the silent house, and walks down toward Barcelona smiling, certain the world is finally smiling back at him.
