Act Two - Lux Aeterna — Chapter 5

David returns home to find Isabella waiting on his doorstep with coffee and twenty pages, despite his instruction to use the letter box. Inside, he lays down rules: he asks the questions, his time is not up for debate, no sarcasm before noon, and she must call him David. They share coffee as he reads and she tidies.

David finds Isabella’s piece largely plotless but vivid, a lyrical portrait of a lonely attic-bound girl whose self-harm mirrors scars David glimpses beneath Isabella’s sleeves. When Isabella probes a damp-smelling room at the corridor’s end, David forbids entry, signaling it is never used. She retreats to fetch more coffee.

After finishing, David teases—praising the coffee, not the pages—then explains that writers must endure indifference and scorn. Isabella admits she needs to write, then asserts her talent. David agrees she has both talent and passion, but stresses that work, technique, and opportunity make an artist. He quotes advice once given to him: every work of art is aggressive and every artist’s life a war.

When Isabella asks to be his assistant, David says he will think about it. She inadvertently opens Cristina’s photo album; David’s tense reaction leads her to comment that the woman is beautiful, which he rebuffs with “She’s not my girlfriend.” Reading the room, Isabella sets a final boundary herself, offering to return tomorrow to begin properly, and leaves.

Her departure plunges the apartment back into an entrancing silence, underscoring David’s solitude, the locked room’s mystery, and the fragile, newly defined mentor–apprentice bond.
