Isabella establishes strict household rules: shared writing hours, nightly critiques, designated chores, and weekly outings. The arrangement brings order to David Martín’s days, and he yields with good humor, pledging honesty in mentoring her work.

With routine restored, David’s commission accelerates. He crafts a plainspoken, prophetic myth that readies a warrior savior to redeem a persecuted nation—language designed to fit any creed. The clean voice and apparent lack of technique thrill David, who notes he can work for hours without brooding over Cristina or Pedro Vidal.

Tempted to disrupt his newfound stability, David dresses to go out. Isabella suspects more “detective work,” but he instead raises the Semperes’ financial troubles. Admitting past failures to help, David proposes a cunning plan that enlists Isabella.

David instructs Isabella to ask Señor Sempere for part-time work, playing a hard-done assistant and hinting at disinheritance to secure a trial with modest commission. He insists she appear during the son’s shift, presentable but modest, to maximize persuasion.

The true scheme: David will supply daily pesetas for Isabella to slip into the till, masking the subsidy as improved sales.
