Act Three - The Angel’s Game — Chapter 9

David settles in a lakeside hotel near Villa San Antonio, buys writing materials, and begins composing a story inspired by Cristina’s childhood photo and a half-remembered jetty. Convinced that words might heal, he writes nightly and visits the sanatorium each morning to read the new pages to Cristina.

For days, Cristina sits unresponsive as David repeats the tale, but on the fifth day he finds her weeping on the floor and recognizing him. Granted an hour outside, they sit by the lake as Cristina recounts a dream mirroring David’s story: a girl escaping a living city to a jetty led by a faceless savior, the ending unresolved.

Cristina’s memory remains fractured—she confuses times, people, and places, alternately mistaking David for Vidal and fearing a nameless pursuer. David’s hope erodes under the strain, though Doctor Sanjuán insists they are progressing. Their routine continues, with small flashes of recognition amid confusion and dread.

One night Cristina locks herself in, screams, and trashes her room. When staff force entry, she is found in the shattered bathroom, bleeding from cuts and claiming she “didn’t let him in.” Sedated, she is moved to a windowless room and strapped down for safety while David keeps vigil.

On waking, lucid and urgent, Cristina begs David to destroy his book, revealing she tried to burn the manuscript the morning she vanished but was stopped by a presence with wolf-like eyes that replaced it in the trunk. David, disbelieving and afraid, calls the doctor. Cristina frees herself, fights violently, and is restrained and sedated again. Left in the corridor, David condemns his own cowardice.
