Epilogue: Russ
Overview
Nine years later, Russ and Aurora have settled in Meadow Springs, where Aurora opens her bookstore, Happy Ending. Russ’s rehabilitated father crafts the shop’s shelves and supports them. Friends and family gather to celebrate, and Aurora’s heartfelt toast affirms their shared future, love, and ever-growing menagerie.
Summary
Nine years after their beginnings, Russ steadies a nervous Aurora outside her newly renovated Meadow Springs bookstore, Happy Ending. They joke about the town committee and the racy name, recalling Jenna’s earlier run-ins. Russ recounts their move from the city after his remote promotion and Aurora’s desire for change, plus Jenna selling them the haunted-house property they turned into a home.
Russ details the rescue animals Aurora “accidentally” collected over the years and the compromise to keep them away from opening day. Inside, they admire the bright, revived shop and the custom shelves Russ’s dad built after weeks of sketches and samples. Living with his father again felt strange but healing; Russ’s dad now sponsors others in Gamblers Anonymous and quietly reassures Aurora in her own father’s absence.
Before guests arrive, Aurora teases Russ for a secret, revealing she invited his mom. As the opening begins, Henry arrives, having painted the kids’ corner and helped with origami stars, and wrangles Mila for ice cream with Nate’s reluctant funding. Friends and townspeople mingle, while Russ avoids Sarah and captures a candid of Aurora glowing behind the register.
As business tapers into a party, JJ prompts a speech. Aurora downs champagne for courage, thanks Meadow Springs for welcoming them, credits friends and Russ’s father for the store’s transformation, and wryly nods to her old “strip club” joke. She closes by calling Russ her happy ending and thanking him for the life they built.
Russ toasts “to happy endings,” and Aurora adds “and unlimited pets,” prompting a room-wide echo. The event cements their new roots: a thriving bookstore, repaired family bonds, and a community that now feels like home.
