Chapter Twenty-Nine: Aurora
Overview
A staff basketball tournament heightens Xander and Clay’s rivalry while Aurora and Russ trade playful mind games. Prompted by Xander to distract Russ, Aurora flusters him mid-play, then fakes an injury so they can ditch the game. Their private escape reinforces their chemistry and ongoing secretiveness.
Summary
Aurora, Emilia, and Xander prep for activities when Xander stages a mock-serious intervention: he believes Aurora plans to help Russ cheat in the staff basketball tournament. Aurora and Emilia tease him, denying any scheme, while Xander’s rivalry with Clay and anxiety about losing boil over.
On the court, Aurora gives Russ his water and the two exchange flirtatious jabs about “sexual wizardry,” aggravating Xander. The tournament drags on, with Xander ball-dominant and the kids enthusiastically cheering. Russ proves unexpectedly strong at basketball, confounding Xander and Clay.
When their teams finally face off, Xander urges Aurora to distract Russ. Aurora whispers a sudden threesome question, startling Russ into missing a catch. Seizing the moment, she gains possession but quickly becomes trapped under Russ’s close defense; the whistle halts play amid bickering between Xander and Clay.
Tired of the game, Aurora and Russ conspire to leave. Aurora pretends to injure herself, and Russ “escorts” her off the court with Xander’s tacit approval. Out of sight, Russ pins Aurora playfully against a tree, and their banter shifts to flirtation, underscoring their growing intimacy and preference for private moments over public competition.
