Chapter Eight: Aurora

Overview

Aurora and Russ recognize each other as fellow counselors and pointedly avoid confronting their hookup. Jenna warmly welcomes Aurora but firmly reiterates the no-fraternization rule, raising stakes for the summer. After an extended tour, Aurora observes Russ bonding with homesick Maya, wrestles with insecurity, and resolves to refocus on herself and the campers.

Summary

Aurora spots Russ in her counselor group and blurts an expletive, triggering a tense, silent standoff as Russ refuses to acknowledge their one-night stand. She stays composed but inwardly stung, noting the irony given her own history of ignoring hookups on campus.

Jenna, Aurora’s former counselor and now a camp director, greets Aurora with affection, then pointedly warns her about the no-fraternization rule. Aurora admits the hookup happened off-site the previous night, and Jenna insists Aurora keep her focus on the campers and the job, highlighting the consequences if she doesn’t.

On a combined camp tour that Cooper prolongs, Aurora notes Russ sticking near Xander and not engaging with her. Afterward at the lake, Aurora people-watches, tracking the camp dogs and seeing Russ with Maya while Fish naps at his feet.

Clay joins Aurora with beers and brags about himself, but Aurora’s attention drifts to Russ. Irritated, she abandons the conversation and joins Emilia on the dock, backpedaling on her vow to avoid drinking and venting about Russ seemingly ignoring only her.

Emilia suggests Russ is simply shy and that Maya is homesick. Aurora concedes Maya’s situation and, while hurt, decides not to chase Russ or spiral about it. She resolves to start fresh tomorrow, focus on camp, and avoid becoming consumed by a man this summer.
