Chapter Five: Aurora
Overview
Aurora and Russ share a tender, enthusiastic first hookup that deepens their connection and highlights Russ’s care and attentiveness. Aurora misinterprets Russ’s post-hookup bathroom break as a dismissal, leaves after noticing he folded her clothes, and walks home. She processes her anxiety with Emilia, revealing vulnerabilities that will complicate their budding relationship.
Summary
In Russ’s room, Aurora and Russ check in about consent and begin kissing. Russ is gentle and attentive, undressing them both and taking his time. Their chemistry escalates as he focuses on her pleasure before they have protected sex, with Russ encouraging and praising Aurora. They climax together, satisfied and breathless.
Afterward, Russ asks if Aurora needs anything, then goes to the bathroom. While he is gone, Aurora texts Emilia about leaving soon and pizza. Interpreting Russ’s prolonged absence as a hint to go, she starts dressing, feeling the onset of her “feeling scaries.”
As Aurora gathers herself, she notices a stack of books on Russ’s nightstand, surprised by his literary pick alongside technical and recovery titles. She then realizes the earlier room noises were Russ folding her clothes, which gives her a warm, unfamiliar feeling but doesn’t stop her from deciding to leave quietly.
Exiting the room, Aurora encounters Henry and a girl; Henry reassures her that Russ is a good guy. Unable to get a ride, Aurora walks home, texting Emilia, who scolds her for the unsafe choice and invites her to share her bed. Aurora reflects on the “feeling scaries,” recognizing her anxiety, need for validation, and fear of rejection.
Back at Emilia’s, Aurora declines pizza and tries to sleep, bracing for a tense family breakfast in the morning. She and Emilia joke about avoiding it, closing the night with Aurora both fulfilled and unsettled by her deepening feelings and uncertainties about Russ.
