Chapter Eighteen: Aurora
Overview
During Pride night, Jasmine gets sick from overindulgence, and Aurora compassionately tends to her while Russ quietly steps in to clean and help. Later, Clay attempts to kiss Aurora and she firmly rejects him. That night, Russ admits jealousy and asks Aurora to take a day off together, advancing their slow-burn connection.
Summary
After a glitter-filled Pride celebration at camp, Aurora deals with a crisis when Jasmine overindulges and vomits over herself and her bed. Aurora cleans up, soothes Jasmine, and coordinates with nurse Kelly. Russ arrives unasked, remakes the bed, takes the soiled bear to laundry, and brings water, earning Jasmine’s curiosity about Aurora and Russ.
With Jasmine settled and Jenna taking over checks, Aurora showers and returns to help at the campfire. Clay asks her to help find gelatin-free marshmallows, corners her in the pantry, and leans in. Aurora loudly rejects the kiss; Clay denies the attempt and leaves, and Aurora later recounts the incident to Emilia and Xander, who tease her.
Back at the cabin, Russ visits with Fish, ostensibly to check on Aurora after hearing about the pantry scene. He admits he’s jealous of Clay and struggles with wanting to act on it but remembers the job and rules. Instead, Russ asks Aurora to take a day off hike—Xander has agreed to swap shifts—so they can return to their spot.
Aurora accepts, pleased by Russ’s candid admission and restraint. They part without a kiss, but with clear intention and plans for the next day, marking a decisive step forward in their relationship.
