Chapter Twenty-Three: Aurora
Overview
Aurora revels in her growing feelings for Russ, and their secret chemistry spikes until a possum interrupts a makeout in the storage shed. Later, a camper’s catastrophic clog floods the bathroom, forcing an evacuation.
As they regroup, Russ comforts Aurora and admits he wouldn’t change the past for fear of not meeting her, deepening their bond.
Summary
Aurora recognizes that the flutter in her stomach is butterflies—she has real feelings for Russ. After kayaking with Emilia, Emilia orchestrates a moment for Aurora and Russ to stow equipment together, and Aurora follows Russ into the dark storage building. They make out intensely, weighing the risk of being caught against their desire.
Before they go further, a noise prompts Aurora to turn on the light, revealing a giant possum that startles her and ends the encounter. Aurora throws herself into counselor duties to avoid acting on impulse. When Emilia, struggling with her period, taps out for the night, Aurora offers to help and heads to the kids’ cabin.
There, Clay, Xander, Maya, and Russ look panicked: camper Kevin has clogged the toilets so badly the entire system backs up. Despite Russ urging they call maintenance, Aurora tries flushing to diagnose the problem and floods the bathroom, forcing an evacuation of the kids to the main building.
With everyone resettled on mats and sleeping bags, Aurora hides in the kitchen, de-stressing with whipped cream as Russ joins her and gently tries to lift her mood. Perched on the counter with Russ between her knees, they share a tender moment and talk about changing the past.
Russ says he wouldn’t change anything because of the butterfly effect—he wouldn’t risk not meeting Aurora. The confession makes Aurora’s feelings surge, and she kisses him, their bond strengthened by shared secrecy, crisis management, and growing emotional intimacy.
