Chapter Thirty-Two: Russ
Overview
Russ’s estranged father appears at camp, revealing he’s been kicked out and vowing to seek help for his addictions. Russ offers cautious guidance but withholds full trust. Russ then confronts Jenna about breaking rules with Aurora; Jenna spares his job, demanding he prioritize Aurora’s well-being and warning him seriously.
Summary
At a picnic bench, Russ’s father arrives unexpectedly, healthier than during his recent hospitalization. He explains Russ’s mother discovered his deceptions, recognized his mistreatment, and kicked him out. He claims he wants his family and life back, admitting deep regret and promising to change.
Russ’s anger softens into guarded hope as he notes his father seems at rock bottom. When pressed on how he’ll change, his father has no plan, so Russ suggests anonymous local programs and removing temptations. His father agrees in principle, expresses pride in Russ, and leaves without pushing for reconciliation.
Processing alone, Russ then seeks out Jenna to accept consequences for being caught with Aurora. He owns breaking the rules and declares his commitment to Aurora, saying she makes him want to stop carrying his burdens alone.
Jenna admonishes that camp is a workplace, not a frat house, but decides not to fire him—for now. She instructs Russ to practice daily gratitude, prioritize Aurora’s healing, and treat her as the best thing in his life. She dismisses him to work, warning that if he hurts Aurora, there will be consequences.
