Chapter Sixteen: Russ

Russ arrives home and awkwardly interrupts Henry with a hookup, then retreats, exhausted and on edge. He tries to nap but fails, missing the noise of camp life. Soon, teammates Kris, Mattie, and Bobby arrive with pizza and beer, eager for news and to catch up.

Over food, Russ explains he returned because a drunk driver hit his dad, offering few details. The friends reminisce, tease him about camp’s no-fraternization rule, and needle him about Aurora. Russ insists he’s following the rules and that he and Aurora are just friends, though he clearly cares. Their support helps him feel renewed.

At dawn, the friends make him breakfast before he drives back to Honey Acres. Feeling tired but determined, Russ checks in without debriefing Jenna and heads toward Brown Bears’ activities to relieve coverage.

Russ meets Aurora on the path. She’s relieved but upset that he left without telling her, admitting she expected more trust from him and even considered flirting with Clay to feel wanted. Russ apologizes and holds back the painful details, acknowledging he’s made them miscommunicators again.

They talk boundaries and communication, agreeing to a middle ground without demanding full disclosure. Aurora mentions rescheduled activities and a planned hike; Russ asks to join. They decide to go together, ready to rebuild their connection despite the camp’s constraints.
