Chapter 67
Overview
During Evie’s birthday night aboard the ship, she and Trystan drop their defenses, dance, and edge closer to admitting their feelings. Trystan reveals he read Arthur’s letter and that Evie is the first person he wants to tell everything. Their bond solidifies, raising the personal stakes amid looming threats.
Summary
Night settles over the ship as Evie and Trystan grapple with recent bad news. Trystan reveals the cook is baking Evie a vanilla birthday cake, a thoughtful gesture that softens the mood. Music starts among the crew, and Evie boldly asks for a birthday present: a dance.
They join the impromptu dance floor. Teasing turns intimate as Trystan calls her accomplice and holds her close, their near-kiss interrupted by a whistle. For a fleeting moment, they imagine a different life but choose who they are now, finding comfort and joy in the present.
Moving to a quieter corner, Trystan gives Evie a crumpled letter—Arthur’s message he once rejected—and admits he finally read it. Evie praises him, and after a brief, awkward embrace, Trystan downplays the letter’s content. Evie counters that being loved is not surprising for him, refusing to let him dismiss the moment.
Trystan then confesses that the first person he wanted to tell was Evie, and that she is the person he wants to tell everything. Their mutual smiles confirm a deepening bond. Evie departs to check on the cake, joking about future children and leaving Trystan flustered but affected, ending her birthday as her best yet—and hoping it won’t be her last.
