Summary
With the party dispersing at the promise of a night with the “Wicked Woman,” Evie faces Trystan’s stony silence. Her attempts at humor and bravado—boasting about being a “prize”—backfire, provoking Trystan’s frustration and highlighting the danger that someone might find Kingsley and claim Evie as a reward.
Trystan rips off his costume horns and, pushed by jealousy and urgency, vows to find the frog before any guest can. He floods the manor with rolling waves of gray death-mist, looking truly villainous as he senses Kingsley’s location. Despite his usual fear of darkness, Trystan strides through unlit corridors with determination, while Evie scrambles to keep up and tests his temper.
When Evie lags, Trystan hauls her over his shoulder and barrels toward a moonlit library. In a rare, tender beat amid the chaos, he drapes his red cloak over Evie against the chill before resuming the chase. His focus and control over the magic suggest he is channeling emotion into purpose rather than losing control.
On the balcony, Trystan locates Kingsley perched on an overhanging branch, precariously close to falling. He growls about making “frog soup,” underscoring the stakes: if someone else reaches Kingsley first, they could claim Evie.
