Chapter 61
Overview
Gideon and Keeley infiltrate the guvre’s holding area, confronting two Valiant Guards who recognize Gideon. They kill the guards and assess the captive, injured mother guvre. Discovering she is sedated, they decide to wait for the drug to wear off, risking discovery but preserving a chance to extract her alive.
Summary
Gideon and Keeley slip into the tunnels toward the guvre’s cage, trading barbed words as they brace for risk. Gideon tries to project confidence, but Keeley insists on realism to keep people alive. The guvre’s pained cries confirm they are in the right place.
At the enclosure, Gideon issues a false order to relieve the two Valiant Guards. The men recognize him as “the Sage boy,” and a fight erupts. One slams Keeley into the cage, but Gideon wounds his attacker. Keeley swiftly finishes both guards, saving Gideon’s life. They hide the bodies and regroup.
Reviewing Gideon’s map, they prepare to extract the captive mother guvre, but Gideon notes she has been freshly sedated and can barely stand. Keeley warns a shift change could expose them, yet Gideon calculates there is time for the drug to fade.
They choose to wait for the sedation to wear off rather than attempt an impossible drag, accepting the heightened danger in order to keep the guvre and themselves alive.
