Chapter 47

Overview

Evie ignores Trystan’s warnings and leaps onto a perilous branch to reach Kingsley. Trystan’s death-mist forms a protective barrier around Evie but refuses to obey him and cannot touch the frog. The magic snaps back and knocks Trystan down as Kingsley escapes, the branch breaks, and Evie plummets.

Summary

On the balcony above a dizzying drop, Evie decides to retrieve Kingsley herself despite Trystan’s order not to risk the thin branch. She distracts Trystan, leaps in her dress, and claws onto the swaying limb, trading barbed quips as she inches toward the frog.

As wind threatens to unseat Evie, Trystan’s death-mist unexpectedly forms a barrier that steadies and even gently guides her. When Evie asks for his help to grab Kingsley, Trystan admits the magic is not obeying him. It protects Evie but passes harmlessly through the frog, leaving Kingsley unaffected.

The wind rises again, the mist cocoons Evie, then abruptly withdraws to Trystan, slamming him to the stone and knocking him down. In the same instant, Kingsley vaults back onto the balcony, eluding capture.

With the support gone, the branch splinters under Evie. She lunges for the railing but misses. The scene ends with Trystan hurt, Kingsley free, and Evie falling into the void.
