Chapter 21

Alexander Kingsley discovers Trystan in the cellars beside the guvre’s cage, speaking softly to the pained creature and revealing his own emotional turmoil. Using his chalkboard, Alexander names Trystan’s state as anguish, and Trystan admits it. They revisit Alexander’s curse, the false story of the enchantress’s execution, and Trystan’s many failed attempts to free him.

Moved by guilt, Trystan vows again to undo Alexander’s curse despite past setbacks. The guvre responds to Trystan’s touch, calming under his hand, showing Trystan’s bond with the creature as he wrestles with responsibility and remorse.

Trystan asks Alexander to confirm that Sage—his apprentice Evie—has safely returned to her chambers, confessing he fears what he might do if he sees her after their charged kiss. Alexander teases him about it; Trystan denies any future kisses, and Alexander calls him a liar, but Trystan remains with the guvre and sends Alexander off.

As Alexander hops away, hunger and cold overwhelm him. Seeking light at a window, he becomes disoriented, forgets his purpose, and his identity dissolves. The chapter ends with Alexander losing higher thought entirely—reduced to being just a frog, imperiling communication and their fragile plans.
