Chapter 6

Overview

Evie navigates a fraught conversation with Nura, admitting Lyssa sees Nura as a stranger. The office fills with allies, where humor and charged banter reveal lingering tension between Evie and Trystan. Clare reports the male guvre’s decline. The chapter ends with Marv announcing an unexpected royal arrival: King Benedict at the Manor’s door.

Summary

In her newly claimed office, Evie reassures Nura that Lyssa needs time, but when pressed on why, Evie admits Nura didn’t raise Lyssa and feels like a stranger to her. Nura struggles with guilt as Evie asserts pride in her investigative work despite Nura’s regret.

The room soon fills: Tatianna arrives, then Gideon, Clare, Kingsley, and finally Trystan. Amid jokes about Trystan pushing a finance worker, Evie and Trystan share a fleeting, blushing glance that exposes their unresolved attraction. Clare updates them that the separated male guvre swings between agitation and despair, barely eating despite calming potions.

As Nura and Gideon depart to find Lyssa, Kingsley’s garbled signs prompt more banter. Trystan privately tells Evie he already has “inspiration,” intensifying their mutual tension and hinting at personal stakes beneath their professional distance.

The moment breaks when Marv bursts in, announcing that King Benedict is at the Manor’s front door, abruptly raising external stakes and cutting short Evie and Trystan’s charged exchange.
