Prairie Princess

Rose arrives by taxi at the sparse Prairie Princess Campground, painfully maneuvering on crutches toward her RV, Dorothy. The heat and awkward stairs make entry daunting, and her isolation unsettles her, amplified by eerie children at the playground.

Dr. Fionn Kane pulls up with Rose’s motorcycle and opens her door, startling her. Seeing her difficulties, he offers practical help and gently checks on her well-being. Rose insists she will manage, but her attempt to retrieve fallen crutches underscores her challenges. Impulsively, Kane invites her to stay at his house, citing the stairs, lack of air-conditioning, and need for proper wound care.

Kane then probes about Matthew Cranwell, pointedly asking if Matt caused her injuries. Rose, fighting tears, offers no confession. Kane warns that Matt, a suspended former deputy with a history of excessive force, frequents a nearby grain mill and his farm outside Elmsdale, increasing Rose’s risk at the campground. He produces Matt’s driver’s license and urges Rose to come with him for safety and support.

After Rose jokes about mutual non–serial killing and confirms she can’t pay, Kane clarifies he expects nothing. She accepts his offer. Rose packs essentials while Kane unloads the bike. He carefully assists her from the RV, escorts her to his truck, and secures her belongings.

As they depart, Kane asks if there’s anything he should know. Rose considers confessing the truth about Matt but stays silent, leaving with Kane toward a safer refuge while still carrying the unspoken burden of what happened.
