He explains limits of his shadow teleport—needing distinct shadows—and demonstrates a solution: summoning star-like motes from his cloak to cast portable, patchy light, generating usable shadows independent of his position.

Rufus urges continued mastery with the Adventure Society assessment only weeks away. Jason acknowledges rapid progress yet feels the distance still to go; Rufus normalizes that ongoing strain as part of lifelong training.

Elsewhere, in Lucian Lamprey’s viewing box, Clarissa Ventress meets the Magic Society Director. Lucian fixates on the Nightingale—Sophie—and demands her. Clarissa cites her public pledge to protect Sophie, warning that open seizure would damage Lucian. She proposes a workaround: engineer Sophie’s capture during a theft, voiding her protective deal and allowing Lucian to lawfully assume control.

Lucian agrees the plan fits his influence. Clarissa accepts the required “pains,” aligning both their interests while preserving her reputation and shielding Lucian from scandal.
