111. Strange Star

Overview

Emir and a pared-down elite resume the search, extracting most survivors and organizing a recovery camp. Five missing are recovered but untrackable, raising fears of enemy tampering and political obstruction to examination. The enemy withdraws; captured leaders self-destruct. Emir witnesses a hidden crystal device explode from within a captive, revealing a lethal failsafe to counter.

Summary

The expedition consolidates: most members are extracted through the offshore aperture to a prepared recovery camp, while only elite silver and select bronze remain in the astral space. Danielle and Thalia coordinate sweeps to retrieve the missing before resuming the mission to uncover and stop whatever is damaging the astral space.

Outside, Vincent runs the support camp with Jason as troubleshooter, managing logistics and difficult evacuees. Rufus and Gary, sent back among unreliable bronze, report Farrah’s death; Jason sits with a despondent Rufus before returning to work, the tent crowded with the grieving.

Emir’s teams rapidly recover all scattered adventurers, including the five whose trackers failed; they are alive but deeply weakened and comatose. Danielle suspects a setup, given the ease of finding them and simultaneous tracker failures. She and Emir debate examinations, anticipating influential families and the local Magic Society director will obstruct scrutiny; Danielle plans to secure permission to examine Jonah privately while avoiding political backlash.

Search teams sweep the many islands, finding abandoned work sites that show the enemy had operated for months but is now in hasty retreat. Ordinary monsters and leftover constructs harry the teams without real threat. Two enemy leaders are captured but immediately suicide in explosive fashion, yielding no intelligence.

Emir escalates personally, ambushing a robed leader at a deserted encampment. After destroying constructs, he collars the target, but a foreign silver-rank effect triggers within the captive: crystalline spikes erupt from inside, killing him and forming a jagged star-like construct. Emir and Constance conclude it is an implanted device rather than the man’s power, forcing them to devise methods to negate this internal failsafe in future captures.
