79. Sand Everywhere

Overview

The team is ambushed by numerous lesser sand elementals in the desert, forcing coordinated, high-power responses. Humphrey’s might and aerial mobility, Phoebe and Gabrielle’s brutal melee prowess, and an elf’s devastating vortex spell break the swarm. The group survives with minor injuries, learning why large desert teams are essential.

Summary

Sand across the desert animates into dozens of crude lesser sand elementals, surrounding the party. Jason identifies limited usefulness for his affliction-based aura and draws his sword instead. Humphrey armours up, takes to the air to assess, and begins annihilating elementals with overwhelming might while moving to aid a struggling elf spellcaster.

Jason builds power on his sword by stacking failed afflictions that trigger Dread Salvation’s Stone Cutter effect, while using his sand-cutter boots to carve through elementals. Phoebe pulverizes foes with explosive strikes, and Gabrielle’s whirling iron staff tears apart any that approach. Humphrey lands to shield the elf, who prepares a large combined fire-and-air spell.

The elf unleashes a “vortex beast” that detonates into a powerful suction and burning core, drawing in and melting sand elementals. Jason and Humphrey sprint clear, momentarily disoriented by the blast, then pivot to reinforce two adventurers being overrun, carving a path and stabilizing the skirmish.

With the vortex tipping the battle, the team methodically finishes the remaining elementals. They regroup, winded but mostly uninjured, and share drinks as Phoebe explains why large teams are standard for dune expeditions. Jason jokes about the discomfort of sand everywhere, closing on a lighter note after the hard-fought ambush.
