67. This is What it Means to Fight Me
Overview
Inside Danielle’s illusionary marsh, Jason turns the terrain and monsters against Rick Geller’s team. He picks off Hannah and Henry, provokes trap weavers, then drives the survivors into leech-infested water. With Claire dead and Rick collapsing, Jason drains and cleanses Jonah’s afflictions only to finish him by drowning. The bout showcases Jason’s ruthless control, mobility, and feast powers, decisively proving his tactical doctrine.
Summary
In an illusion-crafted marsh, Jason moves effortlessly through mud and darkness, ignoring trap weaver webs and striking from shadows. Rick Geller’s team—Rick, Jonah, Henry, and elf twins Hannah (archer) and Claire (healer)—advance cautiously, aware Jason needs only minor wounds to afflict them. Hannah scouts a path through dense webs while Henry tries to track Jason by scent and magic.
Jason manufactures chaos: noises suggest he is under attack, luring the team forward. In the confusion, Hannah disappears and reappears as a web-hung corpse; while the team recoils, Henry vanishes as well. A brief assault on Claire’s shield confirms Jason’s hit-and-run plan, so Rick orders Jonah to roar and enrage the trap weavers, hoping massed monsters will flush Jason into a straight fight.
Jason taunts them from shifting positions, harvesting energy from Hannah’s illusory body and destroying it to unnerve Claire. The team is swarmed by trap weavers until Jonah leads them into open water where spiders cannot follow. There, unseen swarms of leeches assail them from below; Claire drops her shield to conserve mana and focuses healing on the others as they claw off parasites, but the afflictions outpace her magic.
Jason appears, kicks Claire back into the water, and disrupts recovery attempts. He demonstrates new mobility by collapsing into his own cloak’s shadow to evade thrown weapons. Claire dies to the leeches, Rick and Jonah tear free but are badly afflicted and bleeding. Rick collapses; Jonah alone remains standing.
Jonah impales Jason once, but Jason endures, then uses his feast powers to draw out Jonah’s life force and separately consume Jonah’s afflictions, leaving only fatal bleeding. Jason parades his control and cruelty, forces Jonah down, and drowns him in mud. The viewing window fades as Jonah’s struggles cease, confirming Jason’s ruthless, environment-first victory.
