87. Can’t Lose

Overview

Jason, Humphrey, and Clive discover a hidden, ruined skill-book vault, salvaging two sealed boxes. Tracking a fallen adventurer, they retrieve the body but are trapped by a bronze-rank marsh hydra. Jason’s new curses build lethal afflictions, Humphrey undergoes a protective transfiguration, and Clive burns life-force to unleash a devastating spell. Together they slay the hydra, complete the contract, and gain significant rewards, including Jason’s Party Interface evolution.

Summary

Humphrey spots signs of a secret door, and Clive reveals it with runes. Inside, they find a flooded repository of mostly rotted skill books but salvage two intact metal boxes for later, hoping to learn more about the complex’s owners.

Pressing through the submerged corridors, they confront shambling corpses that Clive identifies as fungus-driven bodies spreading dangerous spores. Jason cleanses Humphrey and Clive, then follows the tracking stone into a ruined hall lined with dug alcoves filled with stored prey. They find the fallen elf adventurer and secure the remains.

A bronze-rank marsh hydra emerges, blocking escape. Humphrey holds the front while Clive attacks with staff-fire, and Jason deploys leeches and curses. Most afflictions are resisted until Jason lands inexorable doom and begins stacking sin via Castigate, then Bleeding and Sacrificial Victim with Haemorrhage, accelerating damage over time.

As Humphrey falters, Jason feints a charge to rally him; Humphrey’s protective will triggers a racial gift transfiguration, empowering his defense. Inspired, Clive burns life-force to restore mana and channels a complex spell that annihilates a hydra head. Jason’s Outworlder Interface evolves into Party Interface, enabling party links, though it offers no immediate combat aid.

The tide turns: necrosis spreads, Humphrey severs more heads, and Stash ambushes the hydra as it tries to flee. Humphrey cripples a rear leg, Jason augments necrotic damage with stacked sin, and together they bring the hydra down.

They complete the contract, earning coins and boons: an Awakening Stone of Absolution for Jason, of the Champion for Humphrey, and a Ring of the Hydra for Clive. Exhausted but triumphant, they regroup with Stash and Onslow, leaving with the recovered body and salvaged treasures.
