Overview

Summary
Lucian summons Cassowary and a nervous bookmaker, Hubert, to learn about the pit fighter Nightingale. Hubert identifies her as Sophie Wexler and recounts her past: arriving as a child after a disastrous surge voyage, her father’s long service under Silva Senior, and Cole Silva’s unwanted interest in her. To protect Sophie, Silva Senior kept his son away, but hostility grew.
Hubert details a failed independent voyage financed by Silva Senior that ended with pirates, her father’s death, and Sophie returning burdened by debt. She fought in the pits, earned the name Nightingale with acrobatic prowess, and later turned to high-end thievery with a partner to repay the debt under Silva Senior’s protection.
After Silva Senior’s death, Cole seized control and pursued Sophie, demanding repayment on his terms. Sophie and her partner fled to Clarissa Ventress, who now fields her in the pits to antagonize Cole. Hubert explains that Cole’s unstable leadership unsettles Silva’s organization, and Clarissa aims to trigger a rash move she can exploit to claim territory while placating Island powers. Lucian, seeing the play clearly, rewards Hubert and orders Cassowary to arrange a meeting with Clarissa.
In a separate scene, Belinda visits the Broadstreet Clinic and learns Jory Tillman is away. She observes Jason Asano treating a crowded room for free with his abilities. Despite Janice’s praise of Jason’s helpfulness and hygiene concerns, Belinda remains suspicious, cautioning Janice not to trust people who claim they only want to help.
