Overview
Jason speaks directly with the goddess of knowledge, testing belief and boundaries. She explains gods’ limits, that outworlder abilities are self-shaped, and reveals Jason possesses a world-phoenix token capable of returning him home—when he is ready or by unknown trigger. She advises strength, and later warns Gabrielle that Jason’s ideas are dangerous.
Summary
Jason enters the knowledge temple’s inner chamber and is addressed by the goddess herself, who appears in place of a statue. They spar verbally over proof, divinity, and manipulation, as she asserts vast knowledge of this world but not the future. She clarifies that deities act indirectly, preferring influence through followers.
At Jason’s urging, the goddess explains outworlders: the interworld transit floods them with magic that they unconsciously shape into systems they understand. She stresses her description is an approximation mortals can grasp, not the true mechanics. She refuses the mantle of mind control, insisting followers retain free will.
Jason asks if he can return home. The goddess answers yes: he has always had the means—the world-phoenix token hidden in his inventory—but he is not ready to use it. She withholds trigger conditions, warns that knowledge of the token would draw predatory interest, and notes the token can activate on its own. If Jason chooses to stay, he should discard it; meanwhile, he must become stronger.
Jason worries magic changed his mind. The goddess asserts his mind is still his; he has changed because circumstances changed. She does not know whether Earth’s gods exist and confirms earlier outworlders from his world either died or returned long ago, leaving Earth’s current state uncertain.
As Jason departs, the goddess shares a private caution with acolyte Gabrielle: Jason is unusual and dangerous—not for power or appetites, but for his ideas that provoke questioning of faith and assumptions.
