DAENERYS — Chapter 72

Overview

Stranded in the Dothraki sea after fleeing Meereen on Drogon, Daenerys struggles with hunger, fever, and doubt while seeking a stream that might lead her back. Visions and memories force her to confront her purpose beyond Meereen. After calling Drogon and hunting to survive, she is discovered by Khal Jhaqo, setting a new perilous course.

Summary

Daenerys descends from a rocky hill she calls Dragonstone, where Drogon lairs amid scorched stone and bones. Ragged, burned, and half-starved, she follows a faint stream she once glimpsed from above, hoping it will lead to the Skahazadhan and, downstream, to Slaver’s Bay. Though she longs to return on dragonback, Drogon’s nightly pull to his lair and her need to rule press her to walk.

As she trudges through the dying autumn grass, she recalls her first journey across the Dothraki sea with Khal Drogo and the losses that forged her. Memories of Daznak’s Pit—the bolts, fire, and her desperate flight—mix with practical hardships: failed grass-weaving for a hat, blistered feet, and scavenging Drogon’s leavings. She debates turning back but repeats, “If I look back I am lost,” and continues along the trickling water.

Night brings cold, hunger, and suspicions of treachery in Meereen—poisoned locusts, Hizdahr’s cry to kill the dragon, and fears for her friends and hostages. She dreams of Quaithe’s starry warning to remember who she is. The next day, ant bites, thirst, and tart berries lead to violent sickness and diarrhea. Fevered visions confront her with Viserys’s bitterness and Jorah’s counsel: she is the blood of the dragon, made for fire and conquest, not to plant trees in Meereen.

Reaffirming “Fire and Blood,” Daenerys notices unnatural movement in the grass and hears bells. A lone Dothraki scout appears but flees in terror at Drogon’s shadow. Dany calls Drogon, mounts him, and gives chase along a path of old burn scars. A vast horse herd scatters; Drogon hunts and kills a lagging horse, and Dany, starving, eats the burned meat beside him.

As smoke drifts and dusk bruises the sky, riders approach. Daenerys stands with Drogon when Khal Jhaqo and his warriors emerge, finding her bloodied, ragged, and alive—an encounter that threatens capture or worse and redirects her fate away from Meereen.
