DAENERYS — Chapter 12

Woken in the night, Daenerys learns nine have been murdered—Unsullied ambushed and prominent freedmen slain by the Sons of the Harpy. Enraged, she orders the wineseller and daughters questioned, then pulls the Unsullied from city patrols to guard walls and herself. She commissions Skahaz to raise a new watch of shavepates and freedmen, levies a blood tax on the pyramids, blocks nobles from fleeing with wealth, and demands children as hostages serving as pages and cupbearers.

Seeking comfort, Daenerys consoles Missandei over her brother Mossador, doubts her own strength, and broods alone on the terrace about Daario and her isolation. In her bath, the masked Quaithe appears, warning of the pale mare, kraken, dark flame, lion, griffin, the sun’s son, and a mummer’s dragon, and to beware the perfumed seneschal. When Missandei interrupts, Quaithe vanishes, leaving Daenerys uncertain whether she dreamt.

At morning court, Daenerys balances guild grievances by protecting titles while requiring guilds to admit qualified freedmen. Hizdahr arrives shorn and brings seven famous former fighting slaves to plead for reopening the pits. They argue for freedom to fight for gold and glory despite risk; Daenerys, torn between duty, gratitude, and Meereenese custom, promises only to consider their pleas.

Climbing back to her chambers, Daenerys asks Barristan for a tale; he recounts his dismissal by Joffrey, escape from the gold cloaks, and resolve to serve the true king, softening Dany’s view of Eddard Stark’s role in her family’s fall. Triggered by guilt over Hazzea, she orders Barristan to take her to the dragons’ pit.

In the vault, she confronts Rhaegal and Viserion chained amid heat and scorched bones, fearing what captivity will do to them and recalling Hazzea’s death and the uneasy blood price she paid. She remembers the failed attempts to seize Drogon, who fled toward the Dothraki Sea. Calling herself mother of dragons and of monsters, Daenerys recognizes the terrible costs of her rule and the peril of the power she has unleashed.
