TYRION — Chapter 19

Overview

The Shy Maid drifts through the Sorrows and the drowned city of Chroyane, where superstition, fog, and greyscale-haunted stone men raise the stakes. Tyrion needles out Young Griff’s true identity and Griff’s likely past. At the Bridge of Dream, stone men attack; Tyrion saves Young Griff but is pulled into the river, fate uncertain.

Summary

The Shy Maid advances into the Sorrows under heavy fog. The crew trades rumors of Garin’s Curse, the Shrouded Lord, and the dangers of greyscale as ruined Chroyane looms around them. Tyrion senses the place’s malign weight and spots signs of ancient splendor turned to desolation, recalling Tysha and his father’s death.

They hear news in the fog of looming war at Volantis, then drift past the vast ruin called the Palace of Love, now the Palace of Sorrow. As the Bridge of Dream appears, Griff warns of stone men and orders torches lit, sending Young Griff below. The youth resists; Tyrion quips that Young Griff matters most to their mission, hinting at a hidden purpose.

After they slip beneath the bridge the first time, Tyrion confronts Young Griff, deducing that the boy is the supposedly dead Aegon Targaryen and that “Griff” is likely Jon Connington. Griff grows uneasy but cannot quell Tyrion’s inferences. Despite believing they have passed the danger, the fog circles them back toward the bridge again.

Stone men drop into the Shy Maid. Duck, Griff, and Haldon battle them back with poles, steel, and fire, knocking two overboard and dismembering another. A third, badly broken, fixates on Young Griff. The boy freezes, and Tyrion kicks him down to get him clear, then drives the assailant to the rail with a torch.

The stone man wrenches away Tyrion’s torch and charges. Tyrion shoulder-slams him, but the creature drags Tyrion overboard. Locked in a death grip, Tyrion sinks into the black Rhoyne, choking as the cold closes over him, his fate unresolved as the chapter ends.
