DAVOS — Chapter 10

Driven by storms to Sisterton, Davos Seaworth is marched into Breakwater Castle, soaked and bound. Lord Godric Borrell confirms Davos’s identity by his shortened fingers and examines Stannis’s sealed ribbon. Davos requests passage to White Harbor on the king’s business, but Godric notes that Sunderland would sell him to the crown and that the Sisters avoid entanglements.

As Davos recounts the disastrous voyage south and Salladhor Saan’s fury over unpaid promises, Godric probes for the Lyseni fleet. Davos claims Saan sails south to harry Lannister allies, masking the truth that Saan has abandoned Stannis. Godric shares sensational news: Tyrion has escaped and Tywin Lannister is dead, but he refuses to let Davos send a raven to Stannis.

Offering bread, beer, and rich sister’s stew, Godric observes the Borrell webbed-hand trait and boasts of spices taken from wrecks, underscoring Sisterton’s reliance on storms and wrecking. He warns that White Harbor would not welcome Davos, then reveals alarming intelligence: Frey ships with a “bag of bones” for Wyman Manderly have passed through, and a Frey marriage pact is in motion despite the Freys’ role in Wendel Manderly’s death.

Davos pleads for help reaching White Harbor, but Godric, long embittered by the North and by Stannis’s past severity as master of ships, refuses. Davos argues Stannis’s record against a child king; Godric counters with Lannister-Tyrell power but admits only winter is certain.

Godric closes with a cautionary tale: Ned Stark once sought aid here during Robert’s Rebellion, and Godric’s father spared him, saying, “If you lose, you were never here.” He grants Davos the same cold courtesy, leaving Davos’s mission imperiled and his presence officially denied.
