TYRION — Chapter 41
Overview
Becalmed in the Gulf of Grief, Tyrion and Penny perform a demeaning joust to placate a sour crew. Tyrion goads Jorah about his exile and spying, earning a brutal blow.
A vast storm fulfills the widow’s prophecy, shattering the mast and claiming lives, including Moqorro. After weeks adrift and dwindling supplies, a galley approaches—revealed as a slaver—escalating their peril.
Summary
Adrift and becalmed, Tyrion rides Penny’s trained sow in a mock joust against Penny on her dog to lighten an ugly mood aboard the Selaesori Qhoran. The act wins scant laughter and hostile jibes. Jorah helps Tyrion up only to disparage him, and Tyrion needles Jorah about spying on Daenerys to win back favor. Jorah, stung, punches Tyrion and orders him to keep away.
When the wind returns, a sinister wall of cloud builds astern. Moqorro appears, declaring the oncoming storm as the fulfillment of prophecy. Tyrion and Penny retreat below with their terrified animals as the tempest breaks. The storm escalates into a deadly maelstrom: lightning nets the sea, the wind tears the sail, and the mast explodes into splinters, impaling Tyrion’s calf. Above, men are swept overboard; below, chaos and filth reign.
By storm’s end, the cog is crippled: hull sprung, mast shattered, nine dead—among them a mate, two Fiery Fingers, and Moqorro. Tyrion laments prophecy’s cruelty; Jorah predicts starvation and cannibal talk grows. The captain dies, then the cook; one boat founders while another rows off, abandoning them. The survivors drift for nineteen sun-blasted days as food and water dwindle; Penny hides with her pig and dog while Tyrion tends wounds and measures the crew’s desperation.
At dawn shouting announces salvation: a galley approaches. Tyrion kisses Penny in relief, but Jorah, drawing steel, recognizes the stench of slavers. Hope curdles into fresh danger as the chapter ends with the slaver bearing down on their wreck.
