JON — Chapter 59

Overview

Jon opens the Wall to Tormund’s people, admitting over three thousand wildlings under strict terms and hostages, including Tormund’s son Dryn. Tensions flare but are contained, and oaths and tolls are taken.

As snow falls and fear of the Others presses close, Jon receives Cotter Pyke’s urgent report from Hardhome: ships lost, cannibalism, and dead things ashore and at sea, setting Jon’s next crisis.

Summary

Jon wakes from a violent dream of battle on the Wall to face the day he will open the gate for Tormund Giantsbane’s people. He steels his officers, warning against any first blood, and sets a disciplined escort to project resolve. At dawn, the horn sounds and the tunnel opens.

Outside the Wall, Jon and Tormund arrange the crossing. One hundred hostages—boys eight to sixteen, with two discovered girls reassigned to Long Barrow—go first, including Dryn, Tormund’s own son, whom Jon takes as page. Warriors follow in force, swearing oaths and surrendering treasures as tolls. Jon navigates gifts, boasts, and the politics of notable free folk while enforcing order and avoiding provocation.

The flow continues through midday, briefly halted by a jammed oxcart that Jon and Tormund resolve before violence erupts. Tormund admits Mance’s famed horn was a bluff, and describes the Others’ tactics: mists, cold, and nightly losses checked by fire. As clouds thicken and snow begins, the column hastens, spurred by fear of the woods and the oncoming night.

By late day, Tormund’s rear guard arrives with the skinchanger Borroq and his monstrous boar, provoking tension with Ghost that Jon suppresses. With the last through, Jon remains to be the final man north, then returns within the Wall.

Inside Castle Black, now bustling with free folk, Bowen Marsh’s count reaches 3,119 admitted, with hostages sent to the other castles and spearwives moved to Long Barrow. Planning resettlement, Jon receives Cotter Pyke’s raven from Hardhome: storms, ships lost, cannibalism among wildlings, Braavosi captains refusing men, attacks on ships, and “dead things” in woods and water. Jon recognizes a new phase of his war has begun.
