THE UGLY LITTLE GIRL

In the House of Black and White, Arya serves wine and water as eleven servants meet. After, a plague-marked priest confronts her identity and motives, warning that the Faceless path demands surrender of self. He offers a test: kill a stranger chosen by the House. Arya agrees to serve and obey.

Restored to Cat of the Canals, she observes her target: an old Braavosi insurer who writes binders for shipowners and captains. She studies his guarded routines, his cautious habits, and his role in paying claims, learning that someone who suffered under him must have prayed for his death. Plans for a direct attack are rejected; she must kill only the marked man without collateral blood.

Before acting, the Kindly Man and the Waif lead Arya deep into the sanctum, the Hall of Faces. There she is given an ugly, broken-seeming girl’s face, experiencing the dead girl’s terror as it bonds to her. Warned she may dream badly, Arya hardens herself for the task.

The next day, the ugly girl takes a long route through Braavos and returns to the Purple Harbor. She identifies a frequent client of the insurer, deftly slits his purse, and swaps in a Faceless Men coin while seizing some gold. She escapes pursuit through alleys and rooftops.

Reporting back, Arya offers a Westerosi dragon coin. The Kindly Man understands: the shipowner used the mixed purse to pay the insurer, and the poisoned coin stopped the old man’s heart. Satisfied, the Faceless Men acknowledge Arya’s progress, return her Arya face for the night, bestow an acolyte’s robe, and assign her to begin an apprenticeship with Izembaro under yet another, prettier face to evade the watch seeking the “ugly girl.”
