JON — Chapter 18
Overview
Jon inspects Castle Black’s stores and confirms a looming famine worsened by refugees and Stannis’s host. Summoned to the king, Jon rejects Stannis’s rash plan to seize the Dreadfort, bargaining the wildlings in exchange for a better strategy. He directs Stannis to win mountain clans and strike Deepwood Motte instead. Melisandre binds Rattleshirt to Jon as a captive-servant, tightening her influence.
Summary
Jon tours Castle Black’s wormways with Bowen Marsh, Dolorous Edd, and Wick Whittlestick, auditing cellars, granaries, and the icy meat vault inside the Wall. Despite abundant stores, Marsh warns of ruinous demand from Stannis’s men, Mole’s Town refugees, and new-arriving wildlings. He urges winter rations and butchering herds; Jon agrees to cut portions, recognizing shortages and danger outside the gates.
Devan summons Jon to Stannis. In the king’s solar, Melisandre presents Rattleshirt as a “gift,” bound by a ruby to her will. Discussion turns to northern loyalties: half the Umbers, led by Mors, might aid Stannis if given Mance’s skull and a pardon for his Bolton-aligned brother. Jon counsels accepting Mors’s terms and avoiding internecine Umber bloodshed.
Stannis reveals plans to march on the Dreadfort, assuming Ramsay is south at Moat Cailin. Jon forcefully argues the risks: Umber lands along the route, warnings via ravens and beacons, likely entrapment by combined Bolton forces, and the Dreadfort’s strength. Knights Massey and Horpe press for boldness, but Jon emphasizes logistics, siege realities, and northern terrain.
Stannis insists he must strike, floats rivals for Winterfell, and again tempts Jon with legitimacy as Jon Stark; Jon refuses, bound to his vows. Jon then bargains: if Stannis grants him the wildlings to use on the Wall, Jon will show where to gain thousands more fighters. Stannis agrees, and Jon points to the mountain clans—Flints, Wulls, Norreys, Liddles—advising the king to go in person, accept hospitality, and win their swords.
With new men in prospect, Jon redirects Stannis from the Dreadfort to Deepwood Motte, a wooden stronghold held by ironborn and vulnerable to a forest approach from the mountains. Stannis, recalling victories over ironmen, sees the merit in smashing them to assert his kingship in the north. Melisandre declares she will remain at the Wall, while Jon privately foresees the burden of feeding the wildlings he has secured.
