JON — Chapter 40

Overview

Jon secretly sends Val beyond the Wall to find Tormund and deliver an offer of refuge in exchange for alliance. Back at Castle Black, Jon clashes with Bowen Marsh, Yarwyck, and Septon Cellador over promoting free folk, keeping wights for study, and admitting wildlings. He reveals thousands gathered at cursed Hardhome, insisting that if they die, they will rise as enemies.

Summary

Before dawn, Jon escorts Val to the northern gate. Despite a half-blind garron, Val insists she knows the forest and accepts the risk to find Tormund Giantsbane. She warns Jon about Melisandre’s interest in Craster’s son and speaks of fickle fire-visions. Jon extracts her promise to return by the first full moon, knowing Stannis expects Val kept close.

Returning to his chambers, Jon notes Ghost’s continued ranging and the growing scarcity of game, a sign of deepening winter. As Jon eats, Bowen Marsh, Othell Yarwyck, and Septon Cellador arrive, thinly veiling complaints spreading through the Watch. Jon discusses the Nightfort’s readiness for Queen Selyse and offers the giant Wun Weg Wun Dar Wun to aid works, which Yarwyck refuses out of fear.

The officers press Jon about sending Dolorous Edd and replacing Iron Emmett with the wildling Leathers as master-at-arms; Jon defends Leathers’s skill and the value of learning free folk ways. Septon Cellador objects to Jon naming Satin as steward and squire; Jon counters that the Watch judges men by their vows, not their pasts, and asserts his decision.

When Marsh questions the guarded corpses in the ice cells, Jon reveals he hopes they rise to learn from them, arguing the Watch must understand wights and Others. The officers recoil, but Jon’s focus remains on knowledge as survival.

Finally, they confront Jon about releasing Val. He explains she carries an offer of food, shelter, and peace if Tormund brings his people to stand with the Watch against the dead. Jon recounts reports of Mother Mole leading thousands to Hardhome to await ships. Though the place is cursed, it offers a harbor and resources. Marsh urges letting enemies perish, but Jon warns their deaths will swell the enemy as wights. He dismisses them, resolute.
