JON — Chapter 54

Overview

Jon brokers a hard bargain with Tormund: the free folk will pass the Wall in three days, surrendering wealth and giving one hundred boys as hostages. He presents Val to Queen Selyse, who demands kneeling and R’hllor, straining their accord.

Val warns of Shireen’s greyscale and demands the baby be removed. Jon faces internal opposition atop the Wall but enforces his plan to house, feed, and arm the free folk against the Others.

Summary

Jon endures Tormund Giantsbane’s fury during a tense parley but holds firm. By afternoon they seal a pact: in three days Tormund’s people will pass south as friends. Tormund pays with heirloom gold armbands, mourns dead sons, and agrees the boys will go first, while mammoths circle by Eastwatch.

Val appears with Ghost, and Jon escorts her back to Castle Black, promising quarters and freedom within the walls but continued captivity. At the gate, Jon announces peace to his brothers and heads to inform Queen Selyse, inviting Val to play the “princess” to smooth politics.

Before Queen Selyse, Jon reports the agreement. Selyse insists the free folk must kneel to Stannis and accept R’hllor; Val refuses, warning that forced kneeling will spark revolt. Jon departs under threat of royal displeasure. Outside, Val condemns Shireen’s greyscale as deadly, demands the “monster” (the swapped infant) be removed from the tower, and presses Jon to act.

Atop the Wall, Jon convenes Bowen Marsh, Yarwyck, Clydas, Septon Cellador, and the mountain lords Flint and Norrey. He outlines the plan: open the gate at dawn in three days; house families and noncombatants in abandoned castles; send spearwives to Long Barrow; keep single men at reopened forts; and allow those who take the black to join the Watch.

Challenges erupt over the Weeper’s admission, disarmament, food, and trust. Jon rejects disarmament, arranges food via Eastwatch funded by surrendering the wildlings’ valuables, and secures one hundred boys as hostages and squires to bind the captains. When accused of treason, Jon cites his vows as the shield that guards the realms of men, asserting the free folk are men and the real enemy is the Others.

As night falls and the wind rises, Jon ends debate, assigning tasks: Clydas to tend the sick, Yarwyck to organize transport, and Marsh to collect and send tolls east. He steels himself against “ice and daggers in the dark,” determined to see the plan through before opening the gate.
