Overview
Stannis publicly burns Mance Rayder to force the free folk to submit, while Melisandre destroys the claimed Horn of Joramun and exalts Stannis with a blazing display of Lightbringer. Jon defies the spectacle by granting Mance a swift death by arrows, then oversees the wildlings’ passage and kneelings.
Backlash grows within the Watch as Bowen Marsh urges sealing the gates and Ser Alliser sneers. Jon maintains a fragile alliance with Stannis, questions Lightbringer’s truth, dispatches friends to other castles, and embraces the isolating burden of command.
Summary
At the Wall, Stannis stages Mance Rayder’s execution by fire to cow the captive free folk. Melisandre proclaims R’hllor’s triumph, displays the supposed Horn of Joramun, and burns it, then exalts Stannis as Azor Ahai while Lightbringer blazes unnaturally bright. As Mance screams within a burning cage, Jon signals selected archers to shoot him, granting a quicker death without openly defying the king.
Stannis orders the stockade opened and offers land, food, and justice to those who kneel. Amid heat and fear, most captives file past, each burning a weirwood token before receiving soup and clothing; some flee to the woods. Leaders including Sigorn and Rattleshirt kneel, while giants refuse to abandon a mammoth and depart. Jon arranges the passage through the tunnel and reflects on the imbalance between the Watch’s weakness and the free folk’s numbers.
Resistance within the Watch surfaces. Bowen Marsh argues to seal the Wall’s gates and stop ranging, citing past losses and the Wall’s defensive strength; Ser Alliser derides the Night’s Watch’s honor. Jon refuses, insisting on common cause against the Others and noting Stannis will not permit sealing the gates. They weigh the realm’s politics—Tywin Lannister’s death and Stannis’s unpopularity—while Jon tries to keep the Watch neutral.
Later, Jon checks on his men at supper, quells jests about Melisandre’s faith, and withholds easy camaraderie to preserve command. He observes Val’s proud captivity, remembers Ygritte, and is joined by Ghost, who returns blooded. With Clydas, Jon drinks mulled wine, recalls Aemon’s wisdom, and doubts Stannis’s Lightbringer after studying tales of Azor Ahai.
Returning to his quarters, Jon writes hard letters to reinforce the Shadow Tower and Eastwatch, sending Halder and Toad west, Grenn and Pyp east. Alone with Ghost and the Old Bear’s raven, Jon accepts the cold reality of leadership and the enduring solitude of his vow.
